Nervousness about starting Boxing/Kickboxing?
« on: December 06, 2011, 03:15:23 PM »
Hi everyone!

I am relatively new to this forum but would like to be open and ask for some honest replies. :)

I have done some basic martial arts growing up as most guys/girls do mostly taekwondo and some basic brazilian jiu-jitsu, all of which ive never felt intimidated in as the Gi sort of puts me in a mode if you get me..

But with boxing and kickboxing i have always been told through masters that it is too basic and thugish, which of course has installed this seed in my head.
So even though i know i can punch and kick really well - i dont know what ill be expecting in return? which honestly just butterflies the nuts outta me ha!
Any advice?

i guess it depends where you go...some places might have some idiots in there but i think overall you'll find that if the coaches are good, the place should be decent

Just remember when you spar in boxing and kickboxing, you are only going easy on each other. Actual matches, expect to get hit, it is going to hurt, you will question if you want to keep going, but it is all just because it's new. A good coach will ease you into it and you will be fine.

This coming from a guy who does full contact martial arts and ju jitsu

I believe it depends on where you train. I checked out a Muay Thai place near my house where they tried to really put it over new guys, they were a bunch of heroes. My experience has been the more professional the set up, and places that train actual fighters, are better. They have nothing to prove so ego is not an issue.
Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Thanks for the comments everyone.. it has slightly eased the pressure, and the martial arts i have done has been full contact, i do want to spar and think ill be quite good but in the process dont want to get my face pummeled in   :chuck:
Ive will not mention names or gyms but some of the initial sign up fees then fortnightlys imo are a joke.. which has just driven me into the garage with a shitty bag.
Ive not personally encountered and thug centers yet, but have heard the myths/truths - sink or swim mentality's.

I always go and watch a class first so I can decide whether it's for me or not. Are you in Sydney by chance?
